HAIR-RELATED RITES OF PASSAGE IN THE RITUAL FOLKLORE OF KAZAKHS AND TURKIC PEOPLES

The purpose of this study is to analyze Kazakh ritual folklore, mythology, cosmogonic concepts, and life cycles, and to determine the semantics and function of hair in traditional culture. In this study, we sought to define the associative understanding of hair in traditional Kazakh culture: a means of communication between worlds, the abode of the soul, strength, beauty and health, well-being, honor, longevity, vital energy, and a symbol of youth and family status. Materials presented in legends, fairy tales, proverbs, and taboos allow us to understand the significance of hair in mythology, family, and everyday rituals, as well as trace the origins of certain behavioral norms associated with this part of the body. Based on folklore texts and ethnographic data, the ritual cycle of "braiding and unbraiding hair during mourning" is examined and its function in the ritualization of transitional stages of the human life cycle is determined.
