DICTIONARIES OF FOREIGN WORDS IN THE AZERBAIJANI LEXİCOGRAPHY

Abstract

Dictionaries of foreign words fulfill practical and theoretical tasks. The theoretical aim is to investigate the etymology of words and interpret their meanings in the particular language in which they function. On the one hand, the dictionary of foreign words reveals the etymology of the language from which they originate, and on the other
hand, it establishes the relationship between these words and their foreign counterparts. The applied character of the dictionary is to replenish the thesaurus of native speakers of Azerbaijani language and improve their ability to correctly understand and explain this or that word borrowed from a foreign language. Several dictionaries of foreign words were published in Azerbaijan in the 1990s. These dictionaries mainly included Arabic and Persian words, which are actively used in the Azerbaijani language due to the geopolitical proximity of the countries and common religion.
